棕刚玉是以铝矾土等为原料，经高温熔炼结晶而成。它具有硬度高，韧性大，颗粒锋锐等特点。用其制成的磨具适用于磨削加工抗张强度高的金属材料。如：碳素钢，一般合金钢，可锻铸铁，硬青铜等。也可以作为耐火材料之用。
